Jackrabbits (6-9 yrs) This year marks the third year for a return to weekday Jackrabbit Lessons! One time is available: Tuesday’s and Thursday’s 5:00-6:30 pm (bring a headlamp and add a layer for warmth). Our first lesson is Tuesday, November 21st for Jackrabbits, with the final official lesson on Thursday December 28th. Skiing with a few dedicated parents on skis accompanying smaller groups of similarly skilled Jackrabbits will continue on the same days from January until the end of snow (mid April).
Bunnyrabbits (walking-5 yrs) Bunnyrabbits are on Saturday’s from 1:30-3:00 pm. Our first lesson will be Nov. 18, 2017 (Bring a snack and water on the trail and dress in layers as much as possible, with a waterproof (nylon outer layer) mitten.). A parent on skis with child is required (and you’ll learn to ski too!).
The Terrain Park is ready, but it needs some brave skiers to get on it and help pack it down. You’ll find the bumps on the very bottom hill at the bottom of the “S-turns” on the extreme right hand side. Have fun!

Hinton Jackrabbit Information
Schedule: Typically, Jackrabbit lessons are Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 5:00-6:30, Bunnyrabbits are on Saturday’s from 1:30-3:00 pm. Please check the lesson schedule posted in the chalet (and provided to each family), so you don’t miss any special events such as moonlight skis, potlucks, races, dress up days, etc. There will be approximately 12-20 sessions, weather permitting during the Jackrabbit/Bunnyrabbit ski season.
Location: Lessons will start at the Hinton Nordic Centre Lower Chalet, unless notified of other locations for special events. Plan to leave Hinton 45 minutes before lesson start time, so that you have enough time to get ready before the session starts.
Concession: The concession is only operating during the Biathlon Race this year (2017/2018). Parents are required to help out in the kitchen at least once per season when it is in operation. Concession is also operated by the Jackrabbit/Bunnyrabbit parents during Races/Loppets, so be ready to help man it! This year’s Biathlon Race is March 10-11, 2018, so please save the date for approximately a two hour shift in the concession.
Communications: A weekly email is sent out with this week’s events, and any other special items. Please read the bulletin board at the lower chalet for information about the day’s activities and/or changes in the schedule or upcoming events. A Jackrabbit calendar is distributed to all registered families, and you may receive a phone call or email (and call/text) for any last minute changes.
Cancellation Policy: Lessons will run as scheduled regardless of weather. It is quite common for temperature inversions to occur between Hinton and the Nordic Centre (i.e. warmer there than in Hinton). In the event that it is very cold (i.e. >-25°C), we will have an indoor lesson with a much shorter ski or an alternate indoor activity. We have a webcam with thermometer accessible from the Hinton Nordic Website to verify conditions before you leave town. Notice of absence to your coach/coordinator is greatly appreciated, so we don’t worry/wait for you.
Parking Lot: Please back in to your parking stall. At the end of Jackrabbits, it is safer to exit with good visibility. It is also preferable positioning in the event that you need a boost or tow. For safety reasons there is absolutely no skiing or sliding allowed in the parking lot.
Clothing: Warm, dry clothing with extra mittens, socks, and a jacket for after skiing should be brought for each skier. A warm toque/hat and mittens with a nylon outer layer are essential, and must be worn at all times. Have extra clothing in a pack or bag for different weather conditions. It is always best to dress in many thin layers of clothing, rather than one heavy layer, with a non-cotton layer closest to skin, if possible.
Wax Kit: For those not on waxless skis: Start with a few different colors and build up as you find a need for more waxes. A starter kit could include Special Violet, Special Green, and Blue Extra, a scraper, and a synthetic cork. By adding special red (for above 0°C) you can cover about 95% of the average conditions. Please have a child’s skis waxed before the Jackrabbit session starts.
